Origin and history
The Chaussée watermill is a building located in the commune of Chenillé-Changé, France. This monument, typical of the buildings related to the exploitation of hydraulic energy, is part of the historical landscape of the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the region Pays de la Loire. Its architecture and operation reflect traditional milling techniques, essential to rural communities before the industrial era.
Watermills played a central role in the local economy, serving mainly to grind cereals for local residents. In Anjou, as in other regions, these buildings were often places of assembly and exchange, integrated into the daily life of the villages. Their presence illustrates the importance of rivers for artisanal and agricultural activities, as well as the ingenuity of pre-industrial techniques.
The Chaussée Mill, registered in 2005, is now recognized as a heritage to be preserved.
