Origin and history

Fleurac's paper mill, located in Nersac, finds its origins in the 16th century as a wheat and oil mill. Its architecture, typical of the region with cut stones and bays in the middle, was almost entirely rebuilt in the late nineteenth century. This historic monument, marked by periods of abandonment, underwent a major reconversion in 1978.

In 1978, Mr. Lacombe, a descendant of a line of paper mills for four generations, transformed the mill into a paper factory at the tank, using 18th-century techniques with flax and cotton. Faced with financial difficulties, a local association, Friends of the Papal Tradition of Angoumois, resumes the activity. The site was purchased in 1983 by the Charente General Council and became a museum.

The mill retains a manufacturing equipment and hydraulic wheel rebuilt according to the Encyclopaedia boards. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1984, it illustrates both the industrial heritage of the Charente and the preservation of craftsmanship. Today, it offers visits and demonstrations of traditional papermaking techniques.
