Origin and history

Moulin Boutard, located in La Membrolle-sur-Coisille, is a historical monument built in the 15th century. It was built by the monks of the fortified priory of Lavaré, founded around 1110. This watermill still retains its water supply system, its wheel, as well as a pool and contemporary farm buildings. Its architecture is distinguished by a ground floor in masonry housing the mechanism, surmounted by a living floor in wood and hurdles.

The mill has been registered with the Historical Monuments since 28 May 1951, under the cadastral reference B. Although its exact address is the impasse of the Moulin Boutard, the accuracy of its geographical location is considered a priori satisfactory (level 6/10). This site illustrates medieval ingenuity in hydraulic and agricultural exploitation, typical of monastic settlements in the region.

The monks of Lavaré, by building this mill, helped to structure the local economy around milling and agriculture. The additional buildings, which are still visible, show an autonomous organisation where the mill played a central role in the processing of cereals. Registration for Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, although information on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation) remains undocumented in available sources.
