Moulin à cavier de la Guénaudière (cad. A 445) : classification by decree of 17 April 1984
Origin and history
The Savier Mill of La Guénaudière, located in Grez-en-Bouère in the Pays de la Loire, is an iconic 18th century building. This type of mill, characteristic of the rural architecture of the time, was essential for local agricultural activities, particularly for the processing of cereals. Its cavier mechanism, powered by hydraulic force, illustrates the technical innovations of this period in rural areas.
Ranked as a Historic Monument by order of 17 April 1984, the Guénaudière Mill bears witness to the heritage importance attached to these old industrial structures. The accuracy of its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), and its official address in the Merimée base (53290 Grez-en-Bouère) confirm its territorial anchor in the department of Mayenne. No information is available on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
At the time of its construction, the mills played a central role in the local economy, serving as a place for crop processing and a gathering point for peasant communities. In the Pays de la Loire, a region marked by strong agricultural activity, these hydraulic infrastructures helped to structure the landscape and social exchanges. Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the lifestyles and craft techniques of the eighteenth century.
