Moulin à vent dit Moulin de Gaillardin (cad. A 616) : inscription by order of 26 December 1976

Origin and history

The Gaillardin Mill, located in Chapelon in the Loiret, is a windmill built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. It rests on a conical masonry base, characteristic of the mills of that time. Although its wings have disappeared, its interior mechanism, entirely made of wood, is still in place and in good condition. This type of mill was essential for rural life, mainly used to grind cereals for local populations.

The mill was entered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 26 December 1976, thus recognizing its heritage value. The precise location of the monument, although documented (13 Impasse du Bourg, Chapelon), is considered to be of satisfactory a priori accuracy according to the criteria of the Merimée base. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, etc.).

Windmills, like Gaillardin, played a central role in the agricultural economy of the Centre-Val de Loire region before industrialization. They symbolized both a technical breakthrough and a gathering place for rural communities. Their decline in the 19th century coincided with the arrival of more efficient water and steam mills. Today, these vestiges bear witness to the artisanal know-how and social organization of the Ancien Régime campaigns.
