Windmill known as Moulin de la Plaine (Box ZB 107): inscription by order of 6 October 1977

Origin and history

The Moulin de la Plaine, located in Barbâtre in the Vendée department, is a windmill registered as the Historic Monuments. Its architecture and mechanism testify to traditional milling techniques, still visible today. The official registration by decree of 6 October 1977 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation by the Community of communes.

Windmills, like the Plain, played a central role in the rural economy of the Pays de la Loire. They allowed for the grinding of local cereals, which are essential for the feeding of people. Their location on areas exposed to winds, such as plains or coasts, reflected an ingenious adaptation to the region's geographic and climatic constraints.
