Origin and history
The mill of the Valley, located in Rombies-et-Marchipont, was built in 1779, as evidenced by the anchors of the iron draughts visible on its facade. It rests on older structures and originally belonged to the Abbey of Crespin, before passing under the Viscounty of Sebourg, then into the hands of private owners. The latter continued to operate until 1966, the date of its final stop on the Aunelle River.
The construction, typical of the Avesnois region, combines brick and sandstone. It consists of two levels, with a wing dedicated to the miller's housing. The flour mill is equipped with an external wheel with metal augers, operated by a hydraulic system. The discharge valves, fixed on sandstone bajoyers, present an original weir in bearings, reflecting the technical ingenuity of the time.
Ranked a Historical Monument, the mill saw its facades, roofs, vanage, hydraulic wheel and technical device protected by a decree of 28 April 1993. Its architecture and mechanism illustrate the 18th century rural industrial heritage in the Hauts-de-France, while emphasizing its past economic role in flour production.
The exact address of the mill, 29 rue du Moulin in Rombies-et-Marchipont, is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 59505, in the department of the North. Although the information on its current access (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its listing as historical monuments makes it a remarkable heritage site.
