Origin and history

The mill of Négreville is a building located in the commune of Négreville, in the department of Manche in Normandy. Built in the 18th century, this small flour mill was certified in 1833. At that time, it was equipped with two wooden hydraulic wheels operating three pairs of grinding wheels: one for wheat, one for buckwheat, and a third for barley and oats. Its mechanism, entirely preserved, bears witness to traditional milling techniques.

The mill operated until the middle of the 20th century, continuing the milling of the secondary cereals after the Second World War before finally stopping its activity around 1967. Its architecture, including an external hydraulic wheel with closed tips, is characteristic of the rural mills of the time. Since May 27, 1975, the mill and its mechanism have been listed as historic monuments, recognizing their heritage value.

Located 350 metres north of the Saint-Pierre church in Negreville, this mill illustrates the central role of water mills in the Norman local economy, especially for the processing of cereals. Its state of conservation allows us to study the craft techniques and lifestyles related to milling before industrialization. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, with an approximate address at 5009 Le Moulin de la Ville.
