Origin and history
The Moulin du Haut, located in Villevieux in the Jura department (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté), is an emblematic industrial building of the last quarter of the 19th century. This mill, still in place with all its mechanical installations, illustrates the technical and artisanal heritage of milling at that time. Its architecture and equipment, such as turbines, millstones, cylinder mills and transmission systems, testify to the technological advances of the industrial revolution applied to the processing of cereals.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 26 August 2021, the Moulin du Haut enjoys full protection, including not only the main building, but also its functional dependencies such as the plumbing canal, the spillway, the leak canal and the silo. This protection also covers immovable machinery by destination, such as gears, elevators, or planichters, which are rare and precious elements. The exact address of the site, 190 rue du Moulin and its cadastre (section AB, parcels 152, 61 and 59), are clearly identified in the archives.
The location of the mill, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7 out of 10) in the heritage databases, allows it to be accurately located in the local landscape. Although the practical information on the visits or services offered (such as a possible room rental or guest rooms) is not mentioned in the available sources, its status as a Historic Monument suggests a certain interest in the preservation and enhancement of this industrial heritage. This type of mill played a central role in the rural economy of the 19th century, ensuring the processing of cereals for local populations and actively participating in community life.
