Remnants of the mill (Case C 285): inscription by order of 24 October 1977
Origin and history
The Moulin du Rhin aux Moëres is an octagonal mill tower, built in bricks in the 18th century (uncertain exact date). Located in the commune of Les Moëres, in the department of Nord (region Hauts-de-France), it was initially dedicated to the drying of the moëres, these wetlands characteristic of the region. Its architecture, typical of the windmills of the period, is distinguished by its brick structure and geometric shape.
Ranked as a Historic Monument, the mill has lost its roof and wings over time, retaining only its exterior walls. It was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 24 October 1977, thus protecting its remains (cadastral park C 285). Today, it stands as a testimony of ancient hydraulic and agricultural techniques, in a landscape marked by the history of the Flemish polders.
Les Moëres, where the mill is located, is a commune whose territory has been shaped by centuries of flood control and lowland development. Mills, like the Rhine, played a key role in water management, essential for agriculture and local habitat. Their decline, often linked to industrialization and technical changes, reflects the evolution of agricultural practices in the region.
