Moulin des Muets (Case ZD 38): entry by order of 24 May 1974
Origin and history
The Muets windmill, located in Artenay in the Loiret department, is a circular building built of cut stone. Its roof, covered with slates, still houses a mechanism partially preserved today, although its wings have disappeared. This mill, typical of the rural constructions dedicated to milling, illustrates the importance of windmills in the local economy before industrialization.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 24 May 1974, the mill of the Muets now belongs to the commune of Artenay. Its location, near National Road 20, suggests a central role in the production of flour for residents and travellers. Windmills, like this one, were essential infrastructures in the French countryside, often managed by millers or local communities to provide food.
