Origin and history

The municipal museum of Blanzay mainly gathers objects from the excavations carried out in the 19th century in the caves of the Chaffaud, located in Savigné. These discoveries, typical of the Magdalenian period, constitute a major part of its local archaeological collections. The Gallo-Roman villa of the Rocheras in Voulême also provided artifacts exhibited in this museum, enriching its historical heritage.

The house that houses the museum dates back to the 18th century and has a remarkable architectural peculiarity: its attic is equipped with an oak frame in the shape of an overturned hull. This technical detail, rare for the time, bears witness to the know-how of local artisans. Although the official address is associated with Civray (code Insee 86029, Department of Vienna), the museum is identified as a Museum of France, highlighting its heritage importance.

The museum's collections are recognized for their archaeological interest, thanks in particular to Magdalenian remains and Gallo-Roman objects. These elements provide insight into the ancient human occupation of the region. The building itself, with its architectural characteristics, illustrates the evolution of construction techniques between the 18th century and earlier periods represented by exposed artifacts.
