Origin and history

The town hall of Crécy-sur-Serre, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a former post office building built in the 18th century. This building, typical of the civil architecture of the period, is characterized by a two-storey structure: a white stone ground floor and a brick floor. A porch gives access to an inner courtyard, while the facade features two carved bas-reliefs representing horses, framing a central window. These decorative elements recall its original function related to travel and transportation.

The monument was listed as historic monuments by order of 8 February 1928, recognizing its heritage value. The protection specifically concerns the facade, a witness to the local history and urban evolution of Crécy-sur-Serre. Today owned by the municipality, the city hall retains a central place in the administrative and social life of the city, while offering a preserved example of 18th century utility architecture.

The location of the city hall on 2 Avenue des Écoles reflects its integration into the historical urban fabric. The Insee code of the commune (02237) and its attachment to the district of Laon underline its anchoring in the Picardie, now integrated into the Hauts-de-France region. Although the sources do not mention systematic openness to the public, its presence marks the landscape and recalls the importance of postal relays in the territorial organisation of Ancien Régime, facilitating exchanges between cities and the countryside.
