Origin and history
MuséAl, inaugurated in 2013 in Alba-la-Romaine, is a museum dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of archaeological collections resulting from excavations at the ancient site of Alba Helviorum, the historic capital of the Helven. These collections, made from local discoveries, aim to enrich the scientific and general public knowledge of this Gallo-Roman city. The museum is part of a dynamic approach, with regular contributions of objects from past or future excavations, to refine the understanding of this historical heritage.
The building, designed by the architect's office 3A du Teil, adopts a clean form of parallelepiped, connected to the archaeological site by a bridge. This subtle architectural integration offers visitors a first visual interpretation of the landscape, without visible remains (walls or columns). The museum stands out for its immediate proximity to the remains of Alba Helviorum, whose remarkable elements it exhibits such as a truncated statue of more than 2 metres, mosaics and Gallo-Roman handicrafts.
MuséAl plays a key role in mediating between the past and the present, relying on a symbolic location: built above a deep area and then covered, it embodies the link between the ancient heritage and future generations. His museum approach emphasizes the contextualization of artifacts, while harmoniously integrating into an environment where archaeological traces are no longer visible on the surface.
