Origin and history
The Albert Schweitzer Museum is an Alsatian museum dedicated to the humanitarian work of Dr Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné (Gabon), from 1913 to the present day. Located in Kaysersberg, his hometown in the Haut-Rhin, he highlights the link between this town and Lambaréné, twinned today. The museum project is based on the house where Schweitzer was born on 14 January 1875, a former Protestant presbytery, and was implemented in 1981 after work on extending to a adjoining house.
The museum's collections are structured around photographs and documents illustrating the evolution of the Lambaréné hospital, supplemented by Gabonese personal and artisanal objects. There are masks, musical instruments, a canoe, or ebony objects made in the leprosy. These material elements reflect local living conditions and practices related to Schweitzer's medical action.
The museum is part of a broader memorial network, including other sites dedicated to Albert Schweitzer in Alsace, such as Gunsbach. He also helped to enhance African collections in French museums, while anchoring his story in the local history of Kaysersberg, marked by Protestant heritage and the legacy of the Nobel Peace Prize.
