Origin and history

The museum of Nogent-sur-Seine was founded in 1902 by sculptor Alfred Boucher. His initial collections come from donations from artists like Boucher himself, Paul Dubois, as well as government deposits and local donations. Composed of sculptures, ceramics, paintings and drawings, they enriched until World War II, when the museum closed and suffered losses.

The reopening of the museum in 1975 was driven by the Nogentese Archaeological Group, which exhibited the results of local excavations. From the 1980s to the 1990s, fine arts collections were expanded through donations, acquisitions (including through FRAM) and deposits. The 2000s marked a turning point with the targeted acquisition of sculptures from the late 19th century, including major works by Camille Claudel, purchased from the art market or his family.

Today, the museum is distinguished by its dual vocation: to preserve the memory of Camille Claudel, who lived in Nogent-sur-Seine from 1876 to 1879, and to enhance a regional archaeological heritage, especially of the Bronze Age. A contemporary building, awarded in 2017, was added to the artist's family home to house these collections.

Labeled Musée de France, the establishment thus combines artistic heritage – with the largest worldwide collection dedicated to Claudel – and local historical heritage, while enjoying a recognized modern architecture.
