Origin and history

The Roger-Rodière Museum of Art and History is a Montreuil hotel focused on sacred art and pictorial representations of the city. Founded in 1935 by Roger Rodière under the aegis of the Society of Friends of Old Montreuil, he was looted during the Second World War, keeping only part of his original collections: Gallo-Roman remains, Merovingian objects and wooden religious statues from churches that have now disappeared.

Since its reopening in 2009 in the hotel Saint-Walloy, a historic building of the Montreuil citadel, the museum has diversified its acquisitions. His collections now include gifts and deposits, such as the sacred art treasure of the Hôtel-Dieu de Montreuil, as well as archaeological works and Anglo-Saxon paintings from the early twentieth century. The museum is part of the Montreuillois Country Heritage and Museums Network (2P2M), alongside the Touquet-Paris-Plage, Étaples and Berck establishments.

The institution pursues an active policy of enriching its funds, while highlighting the local heritage. Its current address, 12 rue Carnot, places the museum in the heart of the citadel, an emblematic site of Montreuil. The collections thus reflect both the religious history of the region and its artistic evolution, with particular attention to works related to the city and its territory.
