Origin and history

The Musée d'Art et d'Industrie de Saint-Étienne came into being in 1833, when the municipality decided to create a fund for a future museum, without a dedicated place. In 1846, a building was built by Étienne Boisson to house the sub-prefecture and then transformed into Palais des Arts to house the museum and municipal library. In 1851, the collection was enriched by the acquisition of weapons by Marshal Oudinot, marking a turning point towards an industrial and artistic vocation.

In 1889, under the leadership of city councillor Alfred Colombet, the museum was officially founded as the Museum of Art and Industry, bringing together fine arts and industrial arts. Marius Vachon, named the first curator, makes it an economic tool for local industrialists, including ribbon designers and shipowners. The museum becomes a place of conservation, training and demulation, linked to the École Régionale des Arts Industriels de Saint-Étienne.

At the beginning of the 20th century, despite the difficulties associated with industrial transformations, the museum was enriched with various collections (emaux, ivorys, ceramics) thanks to the Ogier legacy. From 1947, under the direction of German Maurice, he moved towards modern art and developed new departments, such as the cycle and the mine. In the 1970s, Bernard Ceysson accentuated this policy with acquisitions of contemporary art, supported by the Casino Foundation.

In 1987, the museum will test three sites, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Mine, refocusing the site on its iconic industrial collections: weapons, cycles, ribbons and textiles. A complete renovation, completed in 2001 under the direction of Nadine Besse, modernises space and reaffirms its vocation as a museum of society, combining traditional heritage and contemporary design.

Today, the museum houses France's second-largest collection of weapons, after that of the Army Museum in Paris, as well as the largest worldwide collection of ribbons. His exhibitions highlight the industrial history of Stéphanois, from the first firearms to the innovations of cycling, to the ribbon industry, a symbol of local know-how. Demonstrations of looms and interactive paths reinforce its anchor in the transmission of traditional and modern techniques.

The building itself, originally conceived as a sub-prefecture, illustrates 19th century official architecture. Its renovation by Jean-Michel Wilmotte in the 1990s allowed to highlight its original volumes while integrating modern museum spaces, creating a dialogue between heritage and innovation.
