Origin and history

The Natural History Museum of Amiens came into being in the 19th century, when its first collections were created. These ensembles, mainly destroyed during a bombing in 1940, marked a major break in its scientific heritage. The reconstruction of the funds was made possible thanks to the war damage compensations, allowing for the significant acquisition of the collections of Levallois-Perret's natural history society.

Complemented by donations from individuals, the new collections were gradually enriched. Today, they are kept in reserve and presented to the public at temporary exhibitions or in the living room on the first floor of the Picardie Museum. Since its reopening on 1 March 2020, the museum has provided renewed access to these scientific treasures, while remaining integrated into the broader museum institution.

Although the museum does not have an independent dedicated building, its anchoring within the Picardie Museum, located at 45 Rue de la République in Amiens, gives it cultural visibility in the Hauts-de-France region. Labelled "Musée de France", he is part of a process of valorizing nature sciences, while bearing the memory of the destruction suffered during the Second World War.
