Origin and history

The Musée de l'École et de la Mine de Harnes (MEM) is a French ethnographic museum created in 1981 in the city of Harnes (Pas-de-Calais) by volunteers gathered in association under the name of the Friends of the School and the Mine. This community project aims to preserve and transmit the memory of local mining and school activities, two pillars of the region's social history.

The museum's classroom, preserved since 1913, offers an authentic testimony of teaching in the early twentieth century. The museum officially opened in 1981, marking the beginning of its mission to enhance industrial and educational heritage. As early as 1984, he took part in the first open day of historic monuments and then in the European Heritage Days in 1991, increasing his reputation.

The museum route consists of twelve rooms and two underground mining galleries. The mine's theme is explored through a lamp factory, a hangman's room, spaces dedicated to modern mining equipment, geology, dangers such as fireburn, and occupational diseases (silicosis). The daily life of minors is also evoked through a kitchen reconstitution and a pit coffee. Two rooms are dedicated to the school universe of the 1900s, with a reconstructed class.

This museum thus illustrates the close link between the school, a place of formation, and the mine, the heart of the economic activity of the mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Its immersive approach allows visitors to understand the living and working conditions of past generations, while stressing the importance of preserving this industrial and social heritage.
