Origin and history

The Vichy Opera Museum, created in 2002 by the Fondation Noëlle and Gabriel Péronnet, is the only one of its kind in France outside Île-de-France. It preserves the archives of the opera, as well as collections of scores, decorations and costumes. Each year, it offers a different thematic exhibition and welcomes researchers and students to its study centre. Particular attention is paid to raising awareness among school audiences, including visits, workshops and appropriate representations.

Vichy's opera, built in 1901 in an Art Nouveau style unique in France, is inseparable from the museum. Its 1,482-seat room, decorated by Léon Rudnicki and decorated with sculptures by Émile Robert and Pierre Seguin, was inaugurated with Aida de Verdi. The architectural complex, including the former casino of 1865 transformed into a convention hall in 1995, has been classified as a historic monument since 1996. The opera experienced its golden age between 1901 and 1964, when Vichy was nicknamed the "summer capital of music".

The museum highlights the turbulent history of opera, marked by events such as the vote of full powers in Pétain in 1940 or the fire of 1986. After its restoration in 1995, the opera reopened with an annual multidisciplinary programme (theatre, dance, concerts). The museum complements this offer by making its archives accessible and organizing temporary exhibitions, while developing educational activities for young audiences.

The architecture of the place reflects its past prestige: the opera hall, with its dome decorated with faces of famous artists (Sarah Bernhardt, Mounet-Sully), and its decorations in harmony of gold and ivory, makes it a heritage jewel. The Convention Palace, housed in the former casino, now houses modern rooms such as the Eugénie Auditorium or the Berlioz Lounge, while preserving historical elements such as Francis Chigot's window.

The museum also plays a role in Vichy's contemporary cultural life. Since 2018, an eclectic summer program (lyric, jazz, pop rock) has animated the city, while events such as the Games Festival or the Great Encounters (created in 2010) attract a diverse audience. Free access for children under 12 years of age and reduced rates for students highlight its educational and inclusive vocation.

Finally, the museum relies on local partnerships, such as with Vichy Culture (a public institution created in 2019), to promote research and mediation. The guided tours, organized since 2005 by the tourist office, allow you to discover both the behind-the-scenes of the opera and the collections of the museum, strengthening its anchor in the thermal and artistic heritage of the region.
