Origin and history

The Musée de la Création Franche came into being in 1988, when Gérard Sendrey, former secretary general of Bègles, opened the Imago Gallery. This space exhibits works by artists who are marginal or affiliated with raw art. The following year, the annual exhibition The Jardiniers de la Mémoire is launched, with the support of Mayor Noël Mamère, marking the beginning of a permanent collection that will become the museum in 1996.

The museum's collection initially builds on that of Claude Massé, close to Jean Dubuffet, and enriched up to 20,000 works in 2022. In 1989, the journal Création Franche was published to accompany the museum's activities, with a biennial periodicity. In 2010, a catalogue was published on the occasion of a new clash of collections, consolidating its reputation.

Since 2022, the museum, labeled Musée de France, has undertaken modernization work to expand its spaces. Its programming includes nine annual exhibitions, including Visions and Dissident Creations, as well as meetings and publications. The museum's holdings are listed at the BnF, and its collections are cited in references such as the Morley 2001.
