Origin and history

The Musée de la Batellerie is an ethnographic area located in Poses, in the Eure, on the edge of the old road of the river Seine. It is managed by the association Les Anciens et Amis de la Batellerie, composed of former sailors. The museum presents collections related to river navigation, including a barge transformed into a museum, the Midway II, and a 1928 tug, the Fauvette, which was declared a historic monument in 1992. Visitors discover historical objects such as mock-ups of locks, old engines, and reconstructions of mariner housing.

The collections include materials illustrating the history of the ship and the haulage, as well as a steam machine and engines, including that of the tug the Jacques, also exhibited at the Musée de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. The tug the Fauvette, still navigable, allows to visit the wheelhouse, the engine room and the accommodation of the crew. These elements reflect the living and working conditions of mariners on French waterways.

The museum is open to the public from 1 April to 30 September, Tuesday to Saturday, and offers tours for groups by reservation between March and November. It is part of a network of museums dedicated to batellerie, such as Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, Auvillar or Pont-du-Château. The works of historian Hubert Labrouche, cited in bibliography, document local history, including the haulage on the Seine in the 18th and 19th centuries and life in Poses under the Third Republic.

Future

From the moment it was acquired, the first idea was to restore it to its original state of tug, which required considerable financial efforts of the commune, of restoration work by the team of former sailor volunteers, which lasted more than two years.
The vessel was classified as a Historical Monument (Ministerial Order of 13 March 1992) but not the more recent engine.

The Fauvette is supported by financial support from the seine-Eure agglomeration and the commune of Poses, and is then supported by volunteers from the Association de la Batellerie de Poses.

Temporary exposure

Le musée de la batellerie s'attache à présenter les grandes étapes de l'histoire locale intimement liée à celle de la Seine et au village de Poses. Il brosse un panorama détaillé de l'évolution du fleuve sous l'effet de l'aménagement du barrage et des écluses, des métiers de la batellerie et de la vie locale.

Temporary animation

Chaque année, le Fauvette est mis en valeur , avec diverses manifestations comme "Pierres en lumière" organisée par la fondation du patrimoine de France et Département de Normandie, le 3ème week-end du mois de mai; ainsi que la journée européenne du patrimoine organisée par le ministère de la culture et l'agglomération seine-Eure.
