Origin and history
The Thann Gate Museum, located in Cernay (Haut-Rhin), has been a municipal museum managed since 1963 by the Cernay History and Archaeology Society and surrounding area. Set in a medieval building with a partially dated tower from the late 13th and 16th centuries, it was renovated and re-inaugrated in 2007. His collections cover local archaeology, military history (1870 to the present), and hospital objects (1945-1955), as well as a sacred art heritage.
The museum is organized around several thematic rooms: the Sutter Hall (a medieval town model), the Weinstoerffer Hall (temporary exhibitions), the Ingold Hall (from neolithic to protohistory), and the Oberreiner Hall (Roman period and French era). The Thann Gate, classified as a Historic Monument, is a vestige of the city's ramparts, with architectural elements such as a broken arch under herse (XIII century) and an oriel (XVI century).
The collections, created after the Second World War, include military uniforms, objects related to the two world conflicts, a reconstruction of a hospital ward, and weaver shuttles. The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is led by volunteers, under the chairmanship of JP Bevilacqua (mentioned in 2023). Its official address is 16 Rue de Thann, in a location geographically specified as fair (note 5/10).
