Origin and history

The Museum of the Prison Tower occupies one of the last remains of the fortifications of Cusset, a medieval tower located at the southwest corner of the historic enclosure. This building, originally part of the city's defensive system, was preserved during the gradual destruction of the ramparts as it served as a men's prison. Its impressive architecture and prison function made it a symbol of local judicial history before its cultural conversion.

In 1961, the city of Cusset purchased the Prison Tower from the prison administration, marking the beginning of its transformation into a historic place. After planning work, the museum opened in 1980. Its collections, spread over three levels, combine archaeological remains, historical objects and works of art related to Cusset and its region, offering an eclectic panorama of the local past, from medieval minerals to artistic creations of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The ground floor exposes minerals from the tomb of the Malavaux and medieval sculptures, such as destroyed church capitals or fragments of religious statues. The first floor preserves memories of John of Doyat, the chamberlain of Louis XI, as well as bronze grain measurements from the Benedictine Abbey. The second floor is dedicated to the artistic representations of Cusset, with paintings, engravings and sculptures signed by regional artists, including Raymond Léon Rivoire or Paul Devaux.

The Jean-Boyer room, housed in the former prisoners' dormitory on the first floor, regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. This municipal museum illustrates the tower's dual vocation: a witness to Cusset's prison and defensive history, but also an example of its artistic and archaeological heritage, from medieval to contemporary times.
