Origin and history
The Musée de la vigne et du vin d'Anjou was established from 1978 thanks to donations from winemakers and actors from the wine world. Its collections, enriched by purchases and deposits, now have more than 2,000 objects and a documentary fonds of 8,500 pieces (photos, posters, audio recordings). These elements illustrate the evolution of winemaking techniques, from the phylloxera crisis (circa 1880) to the mechanization of the 1970s.
The museum occupies a former wine cellar of the early 20th century, classified as Musée de France. Its permanent exhibitions are organized around five themes: the work of the vine, the production of wine, the presses, the cooperage, and the links between wine and society. Among its assets are a collection of well-documented local presses, reflecting the artisanal and industrial heritage of Anjou-Saumur.
The objects come from more than 320 donors, mainly wine professionals. The museum highlights the Angevin terroirs, with emphasis on the technical and social changes that have marked regional viticulture. Its location in Beaulieu-sur-Layon (comune of Val-du-Layon) highlights its anchoring in a historical territory of wine production.
