Origin and history

The Béziers Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1859 by the Béziers Archaeological, Scientific and Literary Society, originally installed in the Town Hall. He was transferred in 1903 to the mansion of Auguste Fabrégat, left to the city in 1879. This building, renovated around 1900, now houses a conservation and restoration centre, closed to the public since 2018. The collections include 19th century paintings and sculptures, as well as 18th and 19th century drawings.

In 1966, Gustave Fayet's family donated his private hotel, located 9 rue du Capus, to the city of Béziers. This hotel, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, became an annex to the museum in the 1980s, dedicated mainly to the works of sculptor Jean-Antoine Injalbert, bequeathed in 1934. The Hotel Fayet, classified Maison des Illustres in 2019, retains its original bourgeois layout and also houses a collection of modern art that belonged to Jean Moulin, given in 1975.

The museum, labeled Musée de France since 2002, is preparing its move to the former Palais des Episcopes, which is expected to become the future Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Béziers by 2030. This project aims to bring together the collections currently scattered between the Fabrégat and Fayet hotels, while at the same time valuing the local architectural and artistic heritage, including romantic, academic and neo-Baroque works.
