Origin and history

Les Charmettes are a property located in the valley of Charmettes, on the heights of Chambéry en Savoie (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Composed of a French house and gardens, it was the asylum of Jean-Jacques Rousseau between 1736 and 1742, when he lived there with Madame de Warens. This place, described in Les Confessions et Les Rêveries du marcheur solitaire, symbolizes for Rousseau a "short happiness" marked by study, nature and a simple life. The house, classified as a historical monument in 1905, retains its 18th century Savoyard stamp, with a living room, a chapel, and the reconstituted rooms of Rousseau and Madame de Warens.

The garden, organized in four squares (medicinal, condimentary, vegetable and fruit fields), also includes an orchard of old varieties and a hillside of Savoyard vines. Rousseau developed his philosophical thinking there, gradually seizing himself to "make a shop of ideas". After his departure, the Charmettes became a place of literary pilgrimage, welcoming Stendhal, Lamartine or George Sand. In 1905, the town of Chambéry acquired the property and made it a museum, under the impulse of sculptor Mars Vallet, author of the statue of Rousseau on the hill of Lemenc.

Classified Maison des Illustres since 2012, the house has preserved its eighteenth century atmosphere, despite internal changes after Rousseau's stay. The valley, spared by urbanization, still offers a landscape of "savoyard countryside" evoking the descriptions of the philosopher. The museum now exhibits objects linked to Rousseau, while the Golden Book retains the signatures of illustrious visitors, testifying to its status as a memorial place since the 19th century.

Rousseau's texts, such as Les Confessions (Books V and VI), underline the importance of Charmettes in his intellectual and emotional formation. He describes a "slightly wild and withdrawn asylum", where nature and loneliness nourished his romantic sensitivity. After the Revolution, the site attracted writers seeking inspiration, while personalities such as François Mitterrand (in 1987) perpetuated this tradition of visitation.

The architecture of the house, sober with its four-paned roof, and its interior decorations (dining room, music salon) reflect the lifestyle of the era. The gardens, restored in the spirit of the 18th century, complete this immersion in the Russelist universe. The museum, managed by the city of Chambéry, remains a tribute to the philosopher's heritage, between historical heritage and literary symbol.
