Origin and history

The Museum of Aviation Beginnings, located in Douzy (Ardennes) on the Sedan-Douzy airfield, is dedicated to the origins of French aviation. He particularly highlighted Roger Sommer, the first Frenchman to beat the world record for flight time, a symbolic feat that marked a turning point in aircraft evolution. The museum also features other Ardennes pilots, such as Henri Brégi or Colonel François de Puilly-et-Charbeaux, as well as aircraft built in the Sommer workshops before 1914.

Inaugurated in September 1989, the museum was born from the initiative of the Association of Friends of the Beginning of Aviation, which reconstructed the 1910 biplane of Roger Sommer, the centrepiece of the collections. It has been redesigned three times, including a major overhaul in 2010 for the centenary of the Sommer record, with the help of performance professionals (MDA company). Despite modest means, it seeks to regularly modernize its approach to attract visitors.

The collections include archival documents, films on the first flights, and reconstructions such as the 1910 biplane. The museum also evokes Roger Sommer's sons (François, Pierre, Raymond) and their legacy, as well as the history of the Douzy airfield, a test site for Sommer aircraft. Pre-1914 aircraft models and air raid stories, such as those of Colonel de Puilly-et-Charbeaux, complete the course.

The site highlights the role of the Ardennes in nascent aviation, with local figures such as Henri Brégi, the first to fly over Africa and Argentina. The museum also highlights the importance of military aeronautical infrastructures, including the Douzy airfield, created by the influence of personalities such as Air Minister Pierre Cot. The original hangars and Sommer workshops in Mouzon are also mentioned.
