Origin and history

The Musée des découvertes des Fontaines Salées is a space dedicated to the presentation of archaeological discoveries made on the site of the Fontaines Salées, located in Saint-Père, in the department of Yonne. This museum showcases artifacts and structures dating mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries, providing insight into human occupation and activities related to this emblematic place of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

The museum is housed in a 15th century house, which serves as an entrance to the site and which was listed as historical monuments by order of 15 September 1958. This classification reflects the historic importance of the site, both for its building and for the archaeological remains it houses. The museum is thus part of a process of preserving and valuing the local heritage.

The Salt Fountains, whose name the museum derives, designates a major archaeological site, known for its salt springs exploited since ancient times. Although the museum focuses on the medieval periods (XIII and XIV centuries), it is part of a broader historical continuity, reflecting the economic and social importance of this type of site in the region. The excavations revealed traces of artisanal, commercial and domestic activities, illustrating the daily life of local people at that time.
