Origin and history
The Musée des plans-reliefs maintains an exceptional collection of models of fortified cities, made between the late 17th and late 19th centuries for military strategic purposes. These works, classified as Historical Monument in 1927, illustrate the evolution of defence and urban planning techniques under the Old Regime and beyond. The associated documentary fonds enriches this collection, offering unique technical and historical lighting on French military architecture.
The museum, attached to the Directorate-General for Heritage and Architecture (Ministry of Culture), is responsible for the conservation, study and dissemination of these collections, which are included in the national inventory. It is part of the thematic area of technical and industrial history, covering topics such as architecture, urban planning, and military history. Its integration into the Hôtel national des Invalides, built under Louis XIV by architects Gabriel and Aubert (1728-1731), strengthens its heritage anchor.
The location of the museum, at 129 rue de Grenelle (Paris 7e), benefits from the label Musée de France. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10), but its appeal lies in the homogeneity and breadth of its collection, considered unique in the world. Available sources (Monumentum, internal data) highlight its educational role and documentary value to researchers and the public.
