Origin and history
The Musée des troupes de marine de Fréjus is a military establishment attached to the Military School of Specialization of Overseas and Abroad (EMSOME), based in Rueil-Malmaison. Founded in 1981, it was developed thanks to the support of the association of friends of the museum, which allowed the construction of two extensions, doubling its initial surface to reach nearly 2,000 m2. A third extension is currently under consideration. Its collections, rich in 20,000 objects, including 5,000 exhibits, include uniforms, weapons, hairstyles, badges, posters, paintings, photographs and archives, covering French military and colonial history.
The museum is distinguished by remarkable thematic ensembles, such as its collection of recruitment posters, specific naval weapons, uniforms of indigenous troops, and badges of colonial troops. These pieces illustrate the evolution of French military forces overseas and their cultural impact. The museum is labeled "Musée de France" and is located on the avenue des troupes de Marine in Fréjus, in the department of Var, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
Although information on its precise location is considered poor (note of 5/10), the museum remains a reference point for the study of military and ethnological history related to Africa and the former colonies. Its website, hosted by the Ministry of Armed Forces, offers additional resources on its collections and heritage. The museum is part of a broad thematic area, covering history, militaria, and ethnology, with a particular emphasis on archives and iconographic backgrounds.
