Origin and history

The Baggage Museum, located in Haguenau in the Lower Rhine, is dedicated to the history of the journey through a collection of 600 objects dating from the late eighteenth century to the 1960s. There are trunks, suitcases, travel requirements, as well as printed and handwritten archives (posters, hotel labels, catalogues). The majority of the pieces come from the private collection of Jean-Philippe and Marie Rolland, including rare objects such as a Louis Vuitton trunk bed of 1868 or a 1925 shoe secretary.

The collections illustrate the evolution of trunk design, especially in luxury (marks like Vuitton, Goyard, Moynat), as well as the history of transportation, fashion and tourism. The museum has a restoration workshop to preserve these objects. Founded in 2011 by Jean-Philippe Rolland, it is managed by a non-profit association. Since 2016, the collections have been exhibited in the former Banque de France, rue Saint-Georges.

In 2015, a temporary exhibition entitled "Haguenau Dream of Travel" presented the entire collection in the hall of the great ride. In the same year, a partnership agreement was signed between the museum association, the city of Haguenau and the Cultural Relay to integrate the collection into municipal collections. The museum highlights emblematic pieces, such as the Goyard trunk office commissioned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1929.
