Origin and history

Tournon Castle, located on a rocky peak overlooking the Rhône in Tournon-sur-Rhône (Ardèche), is a building mostly built in the 15th and 16th centuries, although traces of a first castle of the 10th century remain. It was occupied by the lords of Tournon until the 17th century, then transformed into a prison until 1926. Since 1928, it has been home to the Musée du Rhône, whose collections cover fine arts, decorative arts and the Rhododian technical heritage. The castle, one of the best preserved in Ardèche, has been classified as a historical monument since 1927, 1938 and 1960.

The site, on the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman castrum, was redesigned in the 14th and 15th centuries, then expanded in the 16th century with Renaissance houses, including the one now home to the museum. The Beauregard Tower, built between 1560 and 1600, as well as the terraces and the chapel (hosting a triptych of Jean Capassin) date from this period. The castle is linked to historical figures such as Saint Louis, Francis I and Henry II, who stayed there during their campaigns in Italy. François de Tournon, cardinal and adviser of the kings, was born there in 1489.

The museum, founded in 1928 by Gustave Toursier and the General Union of Rhodeans, brings together municipal and private collections. It highlights Rhodanian history through models of dams, navigational objects, and works of art from the 16th to the 20th century. Among the notable pieces are the triptych of the sixteenth century, ceramics, and reconstructions like the chamber of Helen de Tournon, inspiring an ode of Ronsard. A landmark, moved from Arras-sur-Rhône in 1939, now adorns the court of honour.

The castle also preserves defensive elements from the 13th to 15th centuries, such as the enclosure of the medieval village. Its facades, roofs and interiors (excluding modern housing) have been protected since 1927, while unclassified parts were listed in 2023. The site thus combines architectural heritage, historical memory and museum collections, illustrating the evolution of a fortress in a cultural place.
