Origin and history
The Museum of Vineyards and Wines of Alsace was founded in 1980 in Ammerschwihr, in the Haut-Rhin department. Its museum base is based mainly on the donations of local wine growers, gathering objects related to the vine and wine trades. These collections illustrate the traditional techniques of viticulture and winemaking in Alsace, as well as the tools used by winemakers over the centuries.
The museum covers several thematic areas, including ethnology of trades and tools, local and regional history, and agro-food science and technology. Its assets include presses, cooperage and glassware tools, and elements related to wine production. These objects testify to the historical importance of viticulture in Alsace, a major economic and cultural activity for the region.
Labelled "Musée de France", the establishment is located at 9 rue de l'Ours, in a location whose geographical accuracy is considered fair (note of 5/10). Although it is officially registered in Kientzheim in the Museofile base, its GPS address corresponds to Ammerschwihr, perhaps reflecting a proximity or administrative confusion between these two municipalities of the Haut-Rhin. The museum remains a key place to understand the Alsatian wine heritage.
