Origin and history
The Estève Museum, located in Bourges in the former Hôtel des Échevins, is dedicated to the work of the painter Maurice Estève. It was created thanks to a first donation of 130 works in 1985, including paintings, watercolours, charcoals, collages and tapestries. This initial fund was enriched in 1989 by five additional works, and in 1997 by 83 lithographs offered by the artist or his successors.
The former Hotel des Échevins, which houses the museum, is a historical monument in itself. This building, formerly the seat of the Bourges municipal administration, offers a prestigious setting to present the various techniques explored by Maurice Estève: oil painting, watercolor painting, drawing, collage and tapestry. The museum journey covers a period from 1919 to 1989, illustrating the stylistic evolution of the artist.
The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is located at 13 rue Édouard Branly. Its address corresponds to Insee 18033, in the Cher department. Although GPS location is considered passable (note of 5/10), the museum remains a must to discover modern art in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its website, hosted by the city of Bourges, provides practical information for visitors.
