Origin and history

The Farcot Museum, located in Sainville, Eure-et-Loir, was designed to honour the memory of Eugene Farcot, born in this commune in 1830. The latter, a renowned watchmaker and passionate about mechanics, wanted to offer his native village a cultural institution. The museum journey, inspired by 19th-century cabinets of curiosity, was designed by Jean-Marc Providence and the COMPA team. It showcases Farcot's travel objects and memories, reflecting its many interests, from watchmaking to archaeology.

Eugène Farcot, whose career was marked by a rapid social ascent, distinguished himself notably at the 1878 World Exhibition in Paris, where he presented a monumental pendulum alongside the jewels of the Queen of England. His journeys around the world, nourished by his passion for ancient civilizations, are evoked through archaeological collections covering Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Far East. Part of the museum is also dedicated to his commitment to air navigation, illustrated by his book Atmospheric navigation (1859) and its role as captain of the Le Louis-Blanc mail balloon, which rejoined Paris to Belgium in 1870.

The museum, labeled Musée de France, preserves furniture and artifacts bearing witness to Farcot's dual life: that of a watchmaker inventor and that of a pioneer in aeronautics. Its arrangement, deliberately eclectic, reflects the encyclopedic spirit of its founder, mixing science, art and history. The official address, Place du Carrefour or 8 Place Farcot, places the museum in the heart of Sainville, in a building whose location is considered fair according to the criteria of geolocalized accuracy.
