Origin and history
The Mornac-sur-Seudre Railway Museum is located in the village's old railway station, built in 1880 when the Saujon-La Tremblade line was opened. This building, which witnessed the golden age of the local rail, saw its commercial and passenger activity cease in the late 1970s. The preservation of this heritage was initiated by passionate volunteers, gathered within the association Chemin-de-Fer Touristique de la Seudre (CFTS), founded in 1982. Their action enabled not only the safeguarding of the line, but also the creation of a museum dedicated to regional railway history.
The museum's visit revolves around a variety of themes: track construction techniques, signalling, rolling stock and train operation. Its flagship attractions include a reconstructed late 19th-century window, a lamp factory, and a railway exhibiting historical material. A faithful model reproduces the Mornac station and its environment as it was when the CFTS operated the line between 1984 and 2002. There are also displays of documents and accessories related to steam and electric trains, supplemented by explanatory signs for a family audience.
The museum is part of an exceptional setting: Mornac-sur-Seudre, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, combines oyster and tourist heritage. The village, located on the left bank of the Seudre in Charente-Maritime, offers a picturesque setting to this place of industrial memory. Associative engagement has played a key role in the transmission of this railway know-how, while at the same time energizing local attractiveness through both an educational and a playful approach.
