Origin and history

The Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau is housed in the house of Mont-Louis in Montmorency (Val-d'Oise), where the philosopher lived from 1757 to 1762. Fleeing Paris to get closer to nature, Rousseau settled there after a conflict with Mrs. d的Épinay, owner of the Hermitage. The house, modest and rural, became his refuge to write major works such as Julie or New Heloïse and Social Contract. The garden, with its "donjon" (mansardian pasture), served as an isolated work cabinet.

The facades, roofs and the garden were classified as historical monuments in 1984, thanks to historical documents (notarized acts, iconography) allowing a faithful reconstruction of its living environment. The museum, labeled Musée de France in 2011, offers temporary exhibitions and a library dedicated to Rousseau and the 18th century. He is a member of the Federation of Writers' Houses and the Historical Route of Writers' Houses.

In 2022, the museum hosted its first contemporary art exhibition, Wonderful Dreams, by artist Michaël Cailloux. The Maison des Commères, linked to Rousseau's life, now houses educational activities and a research library. The site combines literary heritage, 17th century architecture and 19th century extensions, testifying to the philosopher's intellectual heritage.
