Origin and history

The Joseph-Denais Museum, located in Beaufort-en-Vallée (Maine-et-Loire), was born from the encyclopedic passion of its founder, Joseph Denais (1851-1916), a journalist and local writer. In 1895, he offered his collections to the city, composed of heteroclite objects: Egyptian archaeology, fine arts, ethnography, or natural sciences. This museum reflects the spirit of 19th century cabinets of curiosity, mixing local and universal history. The presentation, unchanged since 1905, makes it a unique testimony of the museum of the time.

The building, designed in 1898 by architect Arsène Goblot, combines a savings bank on the ground floor with the museum upstairs, in an eclectic style inspired by 17th century private hotels. Inaugurated in 1905, the museum was enriched by the commitment of the Denais family: his wife Lucie (until 1922) collected objects from the First World War, while their daughter Marie-Joseph (1922-1964) devoted himself to the popular arts, helped by Georges-Henri Rivière, pioneer of society museums.

Between 1965 and 1991, volunteer curators such as Georges Doudon and Claude Renouard studied collections, while the "Société des Amis du Musée" managed it from 1987 to 1994. In 1995, the museum went under departmental supervision and was renovated between 2009 and 2011 by architect Bruno Pantz and museum designer Sophie Thomas, for a budget of €4 million. Since 2024, he has been offering a monthly event instead of temporary exhibitions.

The collection, today with 9,000 objects, includes rare pieces such as Camille Claudel's Little Chestnut or an Egyptian mummy. The museum, called the "last cabinet of 19th century curiosities", places local history in a universal context, inviting a "immobile journey" through time and culture. Its architecture, combining Florentine facade and functional layout, also makes it a remarkable example of the 1900 heritage.

Joseph Denais, a passionate collector, brought together local and international works, reflecting the diversity of the arts and knowledge of his time. Its encyclopedic approach and its desire to transmit an accessible heritage have long-term marked the identity of the museum, preserved by its successors and contemporary renovations.
