Origin and history

Louis Braille's home, located in Coupvray, Seine-et-Marne, is an 18th-century building transformed into a museum dedicated to the life and work of his illustrious occupant. This place, where Louis Braille was born in 1809, preserves architectural elements and personal objects evoking his childhood and revolutionary invention: the tactile writing system for the blind. The building, typical of the rural dwellings of the period, was preserved for its historical and educational character.

Inscribed to historical monuments by order of 8 December 1966, the house — including its garden — has also enjoyed the label Maisons des Illustres since 2011. This dual status underscores its heritage and cultural importance, while anchoring the museum in a national network of places celebrating outstanding figures. The management of the site is the responsibility of the commune of Couvray, which ensures its conservation and its opening to the public.

The museum is part of a regional context marked by the enhancement of local heritages. In Île-de-France, and particularly in Seine-et-Marne, the birthplaces of historical personalities play a key role in the transmission of collective memory. That of Louis Braille illustrates the lasting impact of a social innovation born in a modest setting, while offering a material testimony on living conditions in this part of France in the 18th century.
