Origin and history

The intermunicipal museum of Etampes, originally called the municipal museum, is located in an outbuilding of the town hall of this Essonian municipality. Founded in 1874 by the donation of Élias Robert, a painter and sculptor, he was first housed in temporary premises before settling permanently in the town hall after the Second World War. His collections focus mainly on 19th-century paintings, including works by Elias Robert himself, as well as creations by Narcisse Berchère, Félix Giacomotti, Louise Abbéma and Édouard Béliard.

The museum also preserves archaeological and historical pieces related to local history, such as fossils of the Stampian, Gallo-Roman mosaics of Souzy-la-Briche, flint blades of Moigny-sur-École, and a 12th century wrought iron gate from Morigny Abbey. In 2002, he won the French museum label, recognizing the quality of his collections and management. Among the notable pieces are a plaster bust by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, directed by Jean-François Legendre-Héral in 1877, which once decorated the mayor's office.

This museum illustrates both the regional artistic history, with a strong representation of 19th century painters, and the archaeological heritage of the Essonne, offering a varied panorama of the cultural and historical riches of Etampes and its surroundings.
