Origin and history

The Uzès Museum was founded in 1910 thanks to the merger of two private initiatives: a Fine Arts Museum created by the painter José Belon, fed by donations from artists, and a museum of local traditions launched by the felibre Albert Roux, inspired by the Arlaten Museum. These collections, made up of donations from the population and artists, have enriched the local heritage. Between the two world wars, the museum experienced a period of abandonment, before being revived in 1945 by Georges Borias, artist and teacher.

Georges Borias developed the collections by integrating local ceramics and creating a fund dedicated to writer André Gide, thanks to donations and purchases supported by the Friends of the Museum Association. The Gide family, originally from Uzège, contributed to this unique fund, which includes manuscripts, correspondence and personal objects. Today, the museum focuses on local archaeology, decorative arts (such as 18th century painted cabinets) and the legacy of André Gide.

Set in the old 17th-century Episcopal Palace, the museum showcases emblematic pieces such as the varnished lands and the pipes of Saint Quentin, as well as the productions of the Pichon d'Uzès factory. These collections reflect the region's industrial and artisanal history. The museum is labeled "Musée de France" and remains a key place to understand the history and culture of the Uzège.
