Origin and history
The Pierre Corneille Museum occupies a 16th century house in Rouen, the birthplace and residence of the writer. This building, typical of the architecture of the period, was transformed into a museum to preserve the memory of Corneille and his literary work. The collection is enriched by the donation of Édouard Pelay, a Romanian bibliophile, who helped to reconstruct the intellectual atmosphere of the 17th century.
The city of Rouen acquires furniture from the Louis XIII period to furnish the rooms, offering an authentic overview of Corneille's living environment. The museum exhibits drawings, engravings and first editions of its works, as well as models of the Old Market Square in the 16th and 17th centuries. These elements illustrate Rouen's urban evolution and the historical context in which Corneille lived and worked.
Corneille's work and personal library, carefully reconstituted, are the centrepieces of the museum. Visitors can discover the conditions in which he wrote his major plays. The museum benefits from the label Musée de France, highlighting its heritage and cultural importance for the Normandy region.
