Origin and history

The Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg has been housed since 1986 in an ancient 14th century cardinalry, located in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (Gard). This urban palace, originally built for ecclesiastical dignitaries such as Cardinal Annibal de Ceccano (from 1344), was occupied by Pierre de Luxembourg, who died there in 1387. The livery was transformed into a mansion in the 17th century by the widow of Baron de Boucoiran, with works led by architect Louis-François de Royers de La Valfenière in 1663.

The museum's collections come from local religious establishments, secularized during the Revolution. Among the major pieces are La Vierge en ivory (14th century), a Parisian masterpiece, and Le Coronment de la Vierge d'Enguerrand Quarton (1453-1454), commissioned for the Chartreuse Notre-Dame-du-Val-de-Bénédiction. These works illustrate the artistic patronage of the Chartreux, who appealed to masters such as Nicolas Mignard or Philippe de Champaigne in the 17th century.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1983, the building combines medieval remains (the tower-door of the Ceccano Palace) and classic decorations (gold gypseries, monumental staircase). The facade, sober and massive, reflects the regional architectural canons of the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum also preserves exceptional liturgical furniture, including a cabinet marked from the Netherlands (17th century) and the stalls of the Chartreuse hotel.

The hotel was split in the seventeenth century: its southern half, acquired by Madeleine de Fayn de Pérault in 1663, was remodeled by the agency La Valfenière. The mason Georges Mangarel, already active in the Chartreuse, carried out the works. In the 19th century, a painting by Léon Tessier (L'Aumône de Pierre de Luxembourg) decorated the ceiling, replaced in 1875. The building has been home to the museum since 1986, highlighting a unique religious heritage in Occitanie.
