Origin and history
The Saint-Remi Museum, located in Reims in the former 18th century Abbey, preserves a rich heritage of more than 35,000 objects covering Prehistory in the Renaissance. Its collections, which came from holdings prior to 1914 and enriched between 1980 and 1990 (Hu, Morgen, Alexander) illustrate regional history through archaeological pieces, works of art and military objects. The tapestries room includes the curtain of the Life of Saint-Remi, while the archaeological sections exhibit mosaics, the tomb of Jovin, or a reconstruction of the Maison des Musiciens.
The museum is distinguished by its varied thematic collections: national archaeology (gallo-Roman, merovingian, medieval), religious art (stature of the 16th-17th centuries, enamels), and military collections (uniforms, armor). One section is dedicated to Asian civilizations (Japanese art), and another to local fine arts, such as the paintings of Jean Hélart, including The Risen Christ appearing at St.Madeleine (1679). The ancient abbey, classified as a Historical Monument, also embodies the classical architectural heritage of the region.
Labeled Museum of France, the institution plays a key role in the development of the French and French heritage. Its official address, 53 Simon Street in Reims (Marne), makes it a central place to explore local history, from antiquity to modern times, through scientific, artistic and historical collections. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), and its website (museums-reims.fr) offers additional information.
