Origin and history

The Villeneuve Museum, located in the Porte de Joigny in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne (Yonne), is a space dedicated to art and local history. It offers a course on artists attracted to the city since the 19th century, notably the Nabis such as Vuillard, Bonnard or Toulouse-Lautrec. A gallery on the floor, overlooking the medieval ditches, exhibits works by sculptors and painters who immortalized the landscapes of Yonne, such as Picabia, Balké and Berthold Mahn. Contemporary rooms host temporary exhibitions renewed every 8 weeks.

The museum also houses historical collections linked to the fortifications of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, a former royal city. There are ancient plans of the city, a drawing of 1575 for the facade of Notre-Dame by Jehan Chéreau, as well as a medieval bas-relief of the Amants de Villeneuve and a 16th century painted panel, The Works of Mercy. The Knights' Hall, on the second floor, presents a collection of models and objects tracing 200 years of history of the National Gendarmerie, from the Revolution to the present day.

The building itself, integrated with the Porte de Joigny, bears witness to the architectural heritage of the city. After extensive work, the museum expanded its spaces to better value its dual heritage: artistic, with the Nabis and their successors, and historical, through the remains of the fortified city and the epic of the Gendarmerie. Its official address, 4 rue Carnot, makes it a central place to discover the cultural identity of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne.
