Origin and history

The Vivant-Denon Museum, located in Chalon-sur-Saône in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, originates in a free drawing school founded by Jacques-François Carbillet in the early 19th century. In 1820 he designed a neo-classical building, built by Mercadier, to train craftsmen and workers. The school, installed in a former Ursulines convent dating from 1757, was transformed into a municipal museum in 1866, with two sections: history/beaux-arts and natural sciences. Its initial objective is to be a tool for public education and for valuing local heritage.

The museum takes the name of Vivant Denon at the end of the 19th century, in homage to Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825), figure of Enlightenment and precursor of museum. Its collections, enriched by underwater excavations in Saône, cover local archaeology (from prehistory to Gallo-Roman times) and fine arts (XVIth–XIXth centuries), with major pieces such as flint laurel leaves or works by the Neapolitan school. The museum, which was listed as a historical monument in 2004, also illustrates the history of image reproduction before photography.

The present building consists of three parts: the former drawing school, an 18th century wing from the Ursulines convent, and a neo-Tuscan gallery added in 1866. The facade, decorated in the early twentieth century, reflects its architectural evolution. Archaeological collections, centered on the Saône, reveal objects of the bronze and iron ages, as well as Gallo-Roman remains, such as a funeral stele or a sculpted group of gladiator buried by a lion. The museum thus embodies both an educational heritage and an innovative approach to river archaeology.

The personality of Vivant Denon, to whom the museum pays tribute, illuminates its modern organization. Its ethnographic collections and engraved wood highlight the links between scholarly and popular culture. The museum remains a key player in the preservation of the Chalonian heritage, combining local history, art and science, in an architectural setting marked by its conventual and educational past.
