Origin and history
The Würth France Erstein Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum opened on 27 January 2008 in Erstein, Lower Rhine. It is the thirteenth museum opened by industrialist Reinhold Würth, passionate about art, and is located near the headquarters of Würth France. Its mission is to broadcast in France the Würth collection, one of the largest corporate collections in Europe, with more than 16,000 works ranging from Picasso to Gerhard Richter, Magritte and Kiefer.
The museum's architecture, designed by Jacques and Clement Vergély, consists of three exhibition rooms totalling 800 m2, including a monumental nave on the ground floor. A 224-seat auditorium completes the space. The adjacent park, designed by Martine Rascle on 5 hectares, offers a variety of landscapes, between mineral spaces and wooded areas, integrating the museum into its natural environment.
The museum offers temporary thematic exhibitions, regularly renewed, like Frisbee! Sport and leisure in the Würth (2024) or Radical collection. Geometric abstraction (2023). Each exhibition is accompanied by cultural programming in the auditorium. The collection covers a wide spectrum, from modern movements to contemporary works, including paintings, sculptures and photographs.
Since its opening, the museum has hosted exhibitions dedicated to major artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Christo, or Fernando Botero, as well as various themes such as Art Brut (2022-2023) or 1914-1918: Image War (2016-2017). These events reflect the diversity of the Würth collection, while being part of an accessible cultural mediation process.
The museum relies on specialized publications, edited by Swiridoff Verlag, which document its exhibitions and collection. These works, often bilingual, contribute to the dissemination of works and associated research, strengthening the museum's outreach beyond the Greater East Region.
