Origin and history

The Zola-Dreyfus Museum in Médan occupies the house that Émile Zola acquired in 1878 thanks to the rights of L-Assommoir, 7th volume of the Rougon-Macquart. He lived there for 24 years, writing eight novels including Germinal and La Bête humaine, and led a double family life there. The property, enlarged with the Germinal and Nana towers, became a meeting place for the Medan group (Zola, Maupassant, Huysmans, etc.), which designed Les Soirées de Médan (1880), a collection of news inspired by the 1870 war.

Upon Zola's death in 1902, his widow Alexandrine bequeathed the house to the public assistance to make it a convalescence facility. Transformed into an ambulance school (1982-1983), it was classified as a historical monument in 1983. In 1984, the Emile-Zola Museum was inaugurated, restoring its original decoration (stained glass lounge, office, tile kitchen in Delft) thanks to personal objects, photographs and archives of the writer. The site also houses, since 2021, the first permanent museum dedicated to the Dreyfus Affair, highlighting Zola's commitment.

The Dreyfus Museum, housed in the Charpentier Pavilion and the Lazaret, explores the themes of justice, anti-Semitism and the media, in connection with contemporary fighting. Inaugurated by Emmanuel Macron in October 2021, he offers temporary exhibitions (such as the one on Jean Dytar's comic book) and educational activities for schools. The estate, managed by the association Maison Zola-Museum Dreyfus, also continues the annual pilgrimage in tribute to Zola, initiated in 1903 by his friends.

The house of Médan symbolizes the crossing of the fates of Zola and Dreyfus, two figures of the struggle for truth. The museum project, led by Pierre Bergé and Eli Wiesel, aims to convey to the younger generations the values of tolerance and commitment. The museum addresses current issues such as Fake News, Cancel Culture or the role of intellectuals, while preserving tangible traces of Zola's daily life: her room, photographs, or manuscripts.

Architecturally, the estate combines the main house, with its iconic towers, and the ancillary buildings (Lazaret, Pavillon Charpentier) dedicated to Dreyfus. Ranked Museum of France and labeled Historical monument, the site is a place of literary and civic memory, attracting researchers, schools and international visitors. The scenography, signed by Christophe Martin, and digital resources make it a modern educational tool, rooted in the history of the Yvelines and the Île-de-France.
